MASALA — CRUISING LOG

MORETON BAY (BRISBANE) TO FRASER ISLAND

JUNE TO SEPTEMBER 2009

WEDNESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER

ROONEY POINT, THE NORTH WEST TIP OF FRASER ISLAND

We are currently anchored off the magnificent beach in the lee of Rooney Point on Fraser Island (below), at the very top of Hervey Bay. The water is about 4 metres deep, jade green in colour, and crystal clear over pure white sand. We arrived yesterday afternoon following a romping 30 mile sail up Hervey Bay from the Great Sandy Straits.

As we passed the half way mark we started encountering Humpback whales on all sides. We must have seen nearly twenty, in groups of up to three (2 adults and 1 young). We zigged and zagged from one pod to another, agog at the best day of whale watching we’ve ever had (right).

An hour short of Rooney Point the wind died and the sea glassed out, so we lowered the sails and motored towards our chosen spot to drop the anchor. Suddenly 2 large adult whales and a calf appeared close to Masala. We killed the engine and drifted slowly with the tide (left).
