As it happens, strong northwest winds are coming on Friday – there is no suitable anchorage in this region for such winds, so we will have to leave then and sail to the river. After that, a southerly change may provide us with a window to sail north to Great Keppel Island.

So much for the last two days, but what of the last 3 months?  Earlier in the year we sold our house in Melbourne and are now cruising permanently aboard Masala, which we bought back from the family we sold her to in June 2007 (the full story will appear on the website after its publication in Yaringa Magazine).

She was in East Coast Marina in Manly, Brisbane, so we decided to stay there and do some work on her as there are a lot of marine businesses in the area. Thus began three month’s hard work seven days a week, with only ten days off in total to go sailing and a few others for socializing. And no pay! Why would you do it?

Barbara and Selwyn, who sold the Jarkan 39 yacht Aurora Kiss to the sailing syndicate we started in Melbourne, were in the area in their motor home. We had them aboard for lunch, along with their very experienced (now retired) cruising friends Eric and Lola, who sailed out from South Africa. It was great to finally have some of our friends aboard Masala.

Another friend, Roger, from Leanne’s consulting days in Melbourne, who now lives only a short distance from East Coast Marina, visited several times and provided a welcome excuse to down tools. We even got invited to his home for a yummy roast dinner.

We took Roger out for a day’s sailing on Moreton Bay. He remained glued to the helm for all of it. As well as being the only Melbourne friend to see Masala when we owned her the first time, Roger now has the distinction of being the first person to ever sail with us on Masala. Rumour has it that since then he has been spending too much time on Yachthub on the internet, looking at yachts for sale.

Two weeks later, long time trailer sailer friends Bernd and Shirley flew up from Melbourne for eight days cruising on Masala. Over this period we did a 110 mile circumnavigation of Moreton Bay. The weather was pretty much perfect. We even managed to swim on two days, when the temperature hit 25 degrees in July. Mind you, there were no Queenslanders in the water.
