Despite their fierce name, the Soldier Crabs (above left) are defenceless. All they can do is make a futile attempt to run away from you at a very low and awkward speed (below). Their antics can keep you amused for hours. Leanne loves picking them up for a play. When replaced on the sand they rapidly bore down and disappear (above right). Maybe they don’t like playing with her?

Low tide reveals a vast sand flat in front of the Sandhills (below). This is where the Soldier Crabs live, along with a few mangroves trying to establish a beachhead in the sand.
