The trees survive because droppings from the sea birds fertilise the soil.

The forest floor is tilled by lots of Buff-banded Rails, which are similar in appearance to a Quail. They are easily seen.

The fringes of the island exposed to the prevailing winds are too harsh for the Pisonia trees, so here they are replaced by Casuarinas and Screw Palms. The latter have aerial roots so graphic in appearance they have to be seen to be believed. We’ll leave it up to your imagination.
