GLADSTONE MARINA—APRIL 2011...continued

Within an hour all the toilet paper was gone. They resorted to using the extra strong paper hand towels provided at the hand basins. Instead of tearing these into small strips, they just used them as giant toilet paper squares – wipe, chuck, wipe, chuck. In minutes, every toilet was blocked and full to the top with crap. Not pretty. For two days we suffered the indignities of the race boys, until they headed back to home and work, leaving the boats to be retrieved at a later date. Peace descended once again.

By early May we were getting close to leaving, planning to head north for our fourth season. But first we had to get the dinghy’s outboard motor serviced.

By the next morning the majority of the yachts had finished. We woke up to a packed marina – 40 race yachts had somehow been squeezed in during the night. Many had just finished and the boys were standing around on the walkways exchanging tales of heroism, consuming carton after carton of XXXX beer for breakfast. Soon it was almost impossible to walk along the fingers for the grog, bodies and wet sailing gear strewn everywhere.

There were cans floating in the water, men peeing off the ends of the fingers, support crews wheeling down trolley loads of eskys and fridges with more grog, the smell of bacon and eggs cooking, what a shock to our peace and quiet! But an interesting buzz.

Not so interesting was inside the men’s facilities. With the arrival of 40 new boats perhaps with an average crew of six, there were suddenly 240 extra men wanting to shower and crap all at the same time. They soon overflowed into the ladies, shouting out warnings as they barged in.
