Bunged Up Bad

Only a few days into the cruise, the skipper was in need of retraining. After the first trip to the beach, we dragged the dinghy down to the water and launched it to return to Masala. Suddenly the dinghy was half full

exchange of greetings over the radio, we found we were both bound for Leekes Beach on Great Keppel Island.

A stiff offshore wind (i.e. coming from the land) set in, that flattened the sea and made for champagne sailing. Both yachts were ripping along, reeling off the remaining 20 miles in less than three hours, at the end exactly the same distance apart as at the start. Brilliant!

Great Keppel Island has perhaps the best swimming on the Queensland coast. The water is crystal clear, the beaches broad and inviting. The island is criss-crossed with walking tracks just waiting to be explored, and now that the resort is closed, they are all but deserted.

But first things first. Champagne and prawns for lunch on Annacol, in typical style – thanks, guys! And hours of yarning to catch up on.

There followed days of perfect weather with hardly a cloud in the sky, walks along the beach, swimming in the mild water, lovely evenings afloat…the Keppels at their best.
