LINDEMAN ISLAND, AT LAST

BACK to Masala Cruise Log

Above: the dramatic profile of Pentecost Island, lit by early morning light, dominates the eastern approach to Lindeman Island.

19 JULY. We have finally left the shaws of Shaw Island (but the shaw jokes roll on…). We gave up on Boat Port at Lindeman Island and instead opted for Gap Beach on the north-east side of the island. The views of Pentecost Island along the way, jutting splendidly upwards and lit by the early morning light, made the short motor worthwhile (no wind, hooray).

Gap Beach proved a great decision for two reasons. The anchorage is much more sheltered than Boat Port in SSE winds, and the walk to the summit is shorter. The down side is that the bay is not as pretty and the beach is very rocky – getting the dinghy ashaw (sorry!) and up above high tide is a challenge. Still, we are soon on our way. We have effectively committed six days to waiting for an opportunity to do this walk, so let’s hope it is good.

Above and Below: after waiting six days to walk to the summit of Lindeman Island, our patience is finally rewarded with a calm, clear day. Views don’t get any better than this. Shaw Island is so large that only a small part of it fits in the photo, in this case centred around an extremely narrow connecting strip of land forming Neck Bay. Can’t wipe that smile off my face.
