In late 2005 Grant and Leanne finally bought their own cruising monohull, a 41.5’ steel cruising yacht called Masala, a Radford 415. In 2009 they sold the house in Melbourne and moved aboard. You can find a link to Masala’s website on the Photowords home page: www.photowords.com.au

Grant and Leanne continued to receive invitations to crew on friend’s catamarans, opportunities they did not hesitate to take up. Trips to the Whitsundays, Bowen to Cardwell, and Hervey Bay to Cairns had a profound influence on their views on sailing.

Masala was sold in 2012 and Grant and Leanne moved to the Mid North Coast of New South Wales to live. It was here they met experienced ex-sailors, now farmers, Peter and Ruth Carter. Over the odd glass of wine and delicious fresh produce from the farm, the idea of starting a catamaran club was floated. The fruit of those discussions is Even Keels Cruising Club.

Grant has in excess of 13,000 sea miles on both monos and cats, and has sailed the entire east coast of Australia from Melbourne to Darwin. On Even Keels, Grant and Leanne have sailed from Hobart to Port Davey on the west coast of Tasmania, and in New Caledonia. He has aspirations of cruising the Kimberley and the Pacific Islands, as well as revisiting his favourite places on the Queensland coast.

Professionally, Grant is a Research Engineer. He has worked with Professor Graeme Clark on the Cochlear Implant Project and spent many years with CSIRO Atmospheric Research doing Greenhouse Gas research. Grant has also done a stint as Director of the Victorian National Parks Association, run his own publishing and wilderness photography business, written several books on car touring and bushwalking, and worked for Leanne (!!) as a business analyst and process improvement modeller. He currently operates Photowords and is branching out into creative writing.

Grant has been a keen bushwalker all his life. He enjoys birdwatching, photography, writing, snorkelling, competitive swimming, reading fiction and non-fiction, chess, ballroom dancing, a capella singing, and playing any form of racket sport.
